Community Angel Food Runners is the prepared and perishable food recovery program of the Greater Vancouver Food Bank Society. Through the Community Angel Food Runners, quality food is donated from restaurants, hotels and cafeterias and then delivered to meal-providing agencies. The program runs seven days a week and saves over 870,000 pounds of food a year which would otherwise be wasted. Instead we are able to provide 1.25 million meals for people in need.
How it Works
- Convenient Pick-Up Options: Pick-ups can be arranged on a fixed schedule or on an as-needed basis.
- Safe Handling: Aluminum containers are provided to donors for the safe storage of food donations.
- Cool Storage: Refrigerated vans are used for all pick-ups to ensure the quality and safety of food donations.
- Quality Inspection: Community Angel Food Runners staff inspect food both at the time of pick-up and again before it is delivered to agencies.
- Direct to Agencies: Quality food is delivered to agencies on the same day it is collected.
Safety and Standards
Community Angel Food Runners and the Vancouver Coastal Health Authority have worked together to develop food selection, storage and transportation guidelines for all donors and recipient agencies. All staff directly involved in routing or handling food must complete the Food Safe course. Donor and recipient agencies also have an appointed staff contact with Food Safe certification.
Food Donor Encouragement Act
Community Angel Food Runners is committed to our generous donors, our recipients and to the safe handling of all food donations. In April of 1997, the Provincial Government unanimously passed Bill 10, the Food Donor Encouragement Act. The act is intended to protect donors from liability as they act in good faith to donate surplus perishable food, while ensuring recipients’ rights are protected. The act encourages organizations to make donations of perishable food and provides a valuable source of nutrition to our recipients.
"Food Runners regularly pick up surplus food from our kitchen that would otherwise be wasted. The program has enabled Hotel Vancouver to be part of an effort to reduce hunger in our community thus bridging the gap between the haves and the have-nots. Our relationship with the program continues to grow and is one we are proud to support."
Mr. Robert LeCrom
Executive Chef, Fairmont Hotel Vancouver
“Lookout has had the honour of working with the GVFBS for over 20 years. Throughout this time. our relationship with them has been essential in allowing us to provide roughly 50,000 meals each year at just one of our sites. Food Runners has been a God-send to our organization. Their staff have always been both polite and courteous and demonstrate a genuine desire to work with us in meeting the nutritional needs of those less fortunate.”
