Last week, the GVFBS received a generous donation of nearly 40,000 pounds of bananas. The shipment had been rejected by a retailer on a account of their colouring, however the banana's themselves were perfectly fine. Even though we didn’t realize at the time that it was roughly 40,000 pounds of banana's, we decided that we couldn't let them go to waste, so we gladly accepted them and immediately began distributing them through our network.
We distributed them to our 15 depots and community agencies, however still had a significant amount left over, so rather than having the remaining banana's go to waste, we approached Potluck Café about the possibility of turing them into banana bread for us. Potluck gladly rose to the challenge, so GVFBS provided the remaining ingredients required to make the loaves.
The banana bread collaboration resulted in employment for 7 people from the DTES community and resulted in the production of 6500 loaves of banana bread, which in turn, is being re-distributed through GVFBS' 15 depots.
Many thanks to our friends and neighbours at Potluck Cafe for making it possible and to Metro News for kindly sharing our banana-rama collaboration!
